WX4NHC Hurricane Season 2012 On-The-Air Station Test
Saturday, June 2nd, 2012 from 9AM-5PM EDT (1300z-2100z)

The purpose of this event is to test the NHC Amateur Radio Station equipment and perform operator training in preparation for this year?s Hurricane Season.

We will be making informal contacts on many frequencies and modes.

We would appreciate signal reports and basic weather data exchange ("Sunny", or "Rain", etc.) from stations in any location.

WX4NHC will be On-The-Air on HF, VHF, UHF and 2 & 30 meter APRS.

We plan on testing on the following voice frequencies +/- QRM

3.950 MHz, 7.268MHz, 14.325MHz, 21.325MHz, 28.425MHz.

We will try to stay on 14.325 MHz most of the time and announce when we QSY.

You may be able to find us on HF by using one of the DX Spotting Networks,

'American Idol' Phillip Phillips' 'Home' Scores Huge Debut

Nabbing top-10 spot on Billboard chart, winner's first single lands second-largest digital-sales week ever for an 'Idol' contestant.

Despite ongoing health concerns, things just keep getting better on the professional front for "American Idol" season 11 winner Phillip Phillips. The singer's debut single, "Home," is making a splash on the Billboard charts, ringing up a series of history-making debuts for the FOX singing competition.

With 278,000 digital downloads, "Home" is the highest-debuting song on this week's Digital Songs chart, bowing at an impressive #2 behind Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe." That number is also large enough to give Phillips the second-best digital-sales week ever for an "Idol" contestant. Only the original "American Idol," Kelly Clarkson, can boast a bigger digital sales week: Her smash "My Life Would Suck Without You" debuted with 280,000 downloads in January 2009.

Propelled by such strong sales, Phillips enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #10, making him the first "Idol" in four years to see his victory single reach the top 10. The last was David Cook, whose 2008 "Idol" single "The Time of My Life" entered the chart at #3.

The rock-solid debut of "Home" also gives Phillips the biggest sales week of any coronation song since 2003, the year SoundScan began tracking digital-download sales.

Billboard notes that two other "Idols" — season two victor Ruben Studdard and runner-up Clay Aiken — have actually enjoyed larger opening frames than Phillips, though their numbers came outside the digital format. Aiken's 2003 season-finale single "This is the Night" moved 393,000 units as a CD single in its debut frame, while Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" shifted 286,000 discs.

Kristen Stewart Went 'Through Hell' For 'Snow White' ... And Loved It

'Huntsman' premiere kicks off Sneak Peek Week, leading up to Sunday's MTV Movie Awards.

Our action-packed lead-up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards kicked off in a big way Tuesday (May 29) with our first Sneak Peek Week screening, of "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Not only were we able to present an exclusive clip from the highly anticipated film and screen it for a very lucky and enthusiastic audience, but stars Kristen Stewart and Sam Claflin were also on hand for a lighthearted-but-juicy Q&A, during which they revealed the pain and gain of their arduous-yet-rewarding experience.

"I think it was way more about getting ready to go through hell rather than learning fight sequences and stuff," Stewart said. "Every time I learned something, it was so not right [for the character]. Everything that I do in the movie, I could physically do."

For Stewart's co-star Claflin, who makes an impressive entrance in the film as the dashing and very skilled archer William, the actor was happy to have seasoned action star Chris Hemsworth around on set for guidance.

"For me, I had Chris Hemsworth to look at constantly," Claflin said of who he modeled his character after. "Way to make you feel less of a man. I think the producers wanted me to be him, but he couldn't play both parts. I was training quite a lot. One day I was on set when he took his top off and said, 'Can you hold this?' and [his stomach] is literally an ironing board," he joked, before admitting that his training was not at all easy. "It was hard. It was very hard work."

When Smith and her colleagues found the seaweed blooming it was clear that it was overgrowing and negatively affecting the underlying corals. Samples were retrieved in 2009 and transferred to Scripps for analysis.

Choi, Gerwick and their colleagues conducted various laboratory experiments and discovered that the seaweed (the cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya crossbyana) generates natural products known as honaucins with potent anti-inflammation and bacteria-controlling properties.

Specifically, the substances hamper bacteria's ability to "swarm" over surfaces. For example, when overtaking a new area, bacteria secrete small amounts of a substance known as a quorum sensing factor, which tests to see if the new surface is safe for colonization. Halting a quorum sensing factor could one day translate to a treatment for bacterial infections. For instance, this could be critical, Gerwick said, in the development of drugs to prevent infection in patients who require catheters to deliver vital nutrients to key areas such as arteries, as well the development of new treatments for acne and other skin conditions.

"I think this finding is a nice illustration of how we need to look more deeply in our environment because even nuisance pests, as it turns out, are not just pests," said Gerwick. "It's a long road to go from this early-stage discovery to application in the clinic but it's the only road if we want new and more efficacious medicines."

"These organisms have been on the planet for millions of years and so it is not surprising that they have evolved numerous strategies for competing with neighboring species, including chemical warfare," said Smith. "Several species of cyanobacteria and algae are known to produce novel compounds, many that have promising use in drug development for human and other uses."
