Lincoln-Way East senior-to-be Matt Stoner withstood the weather and a tight leaderboard last week to capture the boys title at the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour?s Championship at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
Entering the final round, Stoner and South Bend, Ind.?s, Michael Makris shared the lead, with seven other players within five shots.
Stoner fired a final-round 77 to finish at 15-over 231. Makris was second at 234.
?I just really focused my mind-set: ?Don?t go after him, we?ll both falter eventually,? ? Stoner said in a news release from the MAJGT. ?I just made a few more putts than him and it turned out my way.?
Stoner?s back-nine 37 erased a two-stroke deficit and earned him his first win on the tour. His previous best finish was a tie for 16th at the Aberdeen Classic.
With the 360 points he earned for the win, Stoner moved into a tie for seventh in the MAJGT Player of the Year standings.
Holes-in-one
Craig Meyrer, of Chicago?s Mount Greenwood community, aced Silver Lakes North?s 180-yard ninth hole with a 5 hybrid. It was witnessed by Joe Lamarca.
Ed ?Skeeter? Skowronski, of Chicago Heights, holed the 155-yard 15th at Lincoln Oaks in Crete with a 7-iron on June 15. Ron Malvestuto, Fred Lobue and Roger Franze witnessed.
Dave Bergliato, of Mokena, holed a 6-iron from 168 yards on Silver Lake North No. 12. Eric Pettit witnessed.
Michael Crapek, of Orland Park, used a 7-iron on the 163-yard 18th at Silver Lake South.
With a 6-iron on the 162-yard 13th at Silver Lake South, Jerry Lendi recorded an ace, with Mark Klein Schmidt and Jim Haverty witnessing.
Chip shots
Frankfort?s Glenn Przybylski is in third in the Chicago District Golf Association?s 2012 Player of the Year standings with 255 points. He trails leader Dave Ryan (400 points). A tournament win is worth 250 points. Lockport?s Andy Mickelson is 16th with 100 points. ... Sanctuary Golf Course hosts the Illinois State Amateur Championship qualifier on Tuesday. ... The 31st annual Chick Evans Junior Amateur Championship will be held July 27 to 29. A qualifying tournament will take place Saturday at Green Garden Country Club. It?s an 18-hole stroke-play qualifier.
