1)?? Sustainable Homes Tour: first-hand look at earth-friendly building technologies
(Lawrence, Kan.) ? On Saturday, September 22nd, guided bus tours to several homes and buildings across Lawrence will showcase environmentally responsible building technologies, as well as earth-friendly construction materials and finishes.
Bus tours will leave at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from the Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair held at Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th Street. Tickets for the Sustainable Homes Tour are $10 per adult and $3 per child under 14. The Heartland Renewable Energy Society, the regional chapter of the American Solar Energy Society, will sell the bus tickets at the Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair starting at 10:00 a.m.
Eileen Horn, City of Lawrence/Douglas County Sustainability Coordinator, and Wyeth Atchison, City of Lawrence Waste Reduction and Recycling Specialist, will guide the tours through homes and buildings which include the following features:
-Solar electric
-Solar hot water
-Passive solar design
-Reclaimed and locally harvested/processed wood
-Water catchment
-Indoor vermicomposting system
-An Energy Star rated home
-A wide variety energy efficient designs, appliances, and products
The Lawrence Sustainable Homes Tour is part of the American Solar Energy Society?s (ASES) 17th Annual National Solar Tour which showcases homes and buildings using solar energy, energy efficiency, and other sustainable technologies to reduce their monthly utility bills and help tackle climate change.
ASES will give away $3,890 in prizes: Grand Prize: $2,500 Gift Certificate, Second Place $1,000 Gift Certificate, and Third Place (three will be awarded) Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus mobile battery charging kit ($129.99 value). Only one entry per person is allowed and you must be 18 years or older to win. The winner will be chosen on November 1, 2012 and will be notified shortly thereafter. No purchase is necessary, but you will be asked to fill out a short survey about the tour.

2)?? Fair offers a look at energy efficiency and conservation techniques
(Lawrence, Kan.) ? The City of Lawrence invites area residents to test drive an electric vehicle and attend a home energy savings workshop at the 12th Annual Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair. The fair will be held on Saturday, September 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Holcom Park Recreation Center, located at 2700 W. 27th Street. The event is free and open to the public.
At the fair there will be exhibitors from various energy conservation categories, including area builders, architects, insulators, heating and cooling experts, solar and wind energy companies, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and alternatively-fueled vehicle representatives. There will also be children?s activities including a human-power light bike, face painting, and upcycling activities.
Fair attendees will have a chance to win an Energy Star refrigerator donated by Home Depot. Raffle tickets for this drawing will be distributed by the exhibitors. Attendees are encouraged to visit all the fair exhibitors throughout the day to increase their chance of winning. The drawing will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the event information table.
This year the Westar Energy ElectroGo program is presenting an opportunity for the public to learn more about electric vehicles during the Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair. Adults 18 years and older will have the opportunity to ride in and drive an electric vehicle, either a Chevy Volt or a Nissan Leaf.
A free 3-hour home energy savings workshop hosted by Westar Energy will teach you about heating and cooling equipment, air sealing (insulation, windows and doors), water heating, lighting, and appliances. Those who register and attend the workshop will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to a local home improvement store. To register, visit www.lawrenceks.org/wrr/energyfair.

In partnership with the Lawrence Energy Conservation Fair, the Lawrence Transit System will offer a free ridership day on the T all day Saturday, September 22nd. Fares on Routes 1-11 will be waived all day.

Reducing Air Pollution by Reducing Toxic Chemicals ? Katie Fankhauser with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 will speak about pollution prevention techniques and safer substitutes for everyday household chemicals.
12:00 p.m. Workshop
Home Energy Savings Workshop ? Laura Lutz with Westar Energy will provide information to assess your home?s energy efficiency and make changes that can help you use energy more wisely.
