RG3's college coach says QB will be back as good as new

WACO, Texas -- The knee injury that Robert Griffin III suffered in last weekend?s wild card playoff game sparked a national debate about playing with injuries.

In Griffin's case, the question became whether he should have been allowed back on the field.

"I'm not going to second guess the doctor if he says it's okay to go in," said Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan. "I don't know. I don't know what they do. Obviously, it surprises you."

In Waco, Griffin's former coach, Baylor Head Football Coach Art Briles has been following the story closely and said Griffin will be back as good as ever.

"I'm concerned about [it] like everybody else, that care about him and loves him, but as far as his journey from now to the end of his career -- not worried at all," Briles said. "I know the man. I know the inspiration. I know the drive. I know the spirit. I know the effort and the attitude that he'll work with. He'll overcome this and he'll be as good as new."

Columnist Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post said the Redskins put his future in jeopardy and that the Griffin "should never have been back on the field and if people in the organization weren't so starved for success, they would have made a better decision about that."

Shanahan said after the game that he might have second guessed himself, but the next day, he thought he made the right decision.

"All the intentions were good, without question, yes sir," Briles said. "It?s just something that you can't predict. There is a lot of unpredictability every time from the sideline onto the field and once you do that, whatever happens, you suffer the consequences or you're rewarded by them."

The Baylor coach even used some wisdom from the legendary coach of a rival.

"It's like Darrell Royal said, 'You're going to dance with the once who brung you,'" Briles said. "He won them a divisional championship. He helped get them to that point. What you're going to do is stay with that as long as it's possible, and as long as it's healthy."

Ever since Griffin won the Heisman Trophy, his visibility has been on the rise nationally. He's already close to being the face of the NFL.

Briles said Griffin will come back strong, and when he does, it'll only make the story that much better.
