For many families, home care is the most satisfying option. It is the least disruptive choice, and it is often more affordable than other elder care options.

Home Care Advantages

There are many reasons to choose home care over other forms of care. Most important, health and personal care is delivered right at home. Home has many positive associations. When people are tired or ill, home is a place of rest and comfort. When they are well, home is a place of sanctity, relaxation and joy.

Home care keeps families together. Family is the most significant social value. Love and support from the family is essential during times of illness. Home care gives seniors the opportunity to stay connected to their loved ones.

Independence is particularly important to people with age-related impairments and health problems. Home care helps to keep seniors independent. With assistance, they can continue to function as productive members of their family, church or community.

Home care is an efficient and effective form of health care, and it also promotes healing. Home care is tailored care, and seniors can participate in their own health care. There is also evidence that patients heal better and more quickly at home.

Unlike many forms of elder care services, home care reduces stress and anxiety for most seniors. Studies show that people who receive care at home tend to live longer and enjoy a better quality of life.

Home Care Employees

Generally, employees of home care services view their work as a calling instead of ?just a job.? Highly trained and highly skilled, caregivers are dedicated to the seniors in their care. They provide a special, personalized type of care that seniors cannot get from other elder care options.

In many cases, home care is less expensive that retirement homes and assisted living centers. It costs a fraction of hospitalization and nursing home placement, when dealing with comparable health issues. Palliative or hospice care at home is the preferred care for seniors with terminal illness.

Microsoft's Surface Can Leverage Education Market

...

More ?

On October 26, Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) will release its Windows 8 software and Surface tablet as an effectively packaged deal. Microsoft is now on the leading edge of a trend to fuse smartphone, tablet, and PC technologies together. The Surface arrives in retaliation to the Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Google Inc. (GOOG) brands that trail blazed this integrated consumer electronics ecosystem model that is now the new normal.

Following the Surface launch, we will discover yet again, that the Microsoft-Apple rivalry is more so synonymous with a Venn diagram. Although Microsoft and Apple share a similar backbone, these two brands appeal to and dominate opposing sets of customers. The Surface will garner significant share if Microsoft makes the pitch to leverage its already strong presence within the education market. Politicians would refer to this strategy as cultivating a "base."

The Education Market

Apple took the initiative to frame its war against Microsoft behind the effective "I'm a Mac - I'm a PC" campaign. This series of advertisements aired between 2006 and 2009. In these commercials, Apple personifies itself as a chic and eager-to-please hipster. Alternatively, Microsoft is a company man in a tweed suit, who cannot get out of his way. Today, Microsoft can now play off these corporate stereotypes to its own advantage. According to Nick Bilton and The New York Times, overzealous "fan boys" who attack critics are damaging the counter-culture appeal of the Apple brand.

Ironically, Microsoft is now the underdog. As such, Microsoft can undercut Apple's version of "cool" within the K-12 and college set. Above the young professional demographic, Microsoft can rely leverage its reputation for functionality to close tablet sales with parents and institutional IT buyers. In academia, the PC already dominates traditional computer banks and classrooms. The Surface tablet is shaping up as a natural extension of this pre-existing infrastructure.

Textbook companies such as McGraw-Hill Companies Inc. (MHP) and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt actually pose as the most formidable barriers of entry for the Surface tablet into academia. The staid Ivory Tower will be the last domino to fall, as traditional publishers fight for survival amid this digital era. Over time, Microsoft Surface dealmakers can take advantage of the perfect storm of a fragmented digital e-reader market, outrageous tuition and fee schedules, and a nearly extinct traditional publishing model to force concessions within the education market.

Windows 8 Microsoft Surface Specifications

Windows 8 software is designed to integrate the feel of the smartphone, tablet, and personal computer platforms within one standard interface. As such, Windows 8 users will be able to toggle through using touch for executing laptop and desktop commands, before picking up a Surface tablet and opening up Microsoft Office. As a workstation, the Surface does include a functional keyboard and USB port for printing, sharing data, and charging phones.

In terms of je ne sais quoi appeal, Microsoft promotes the sleek profile of the Surface tablet. Weighing in at 903 grams, the Windows 8 Pro Surface tablet features a 10.6-inch high definition screen and is a mere 13.5 millimeters thick. For portability, the Surface keyboard and kickstand fold together as protective coverings. Taking a page out of the Apple playbook, the Surface comes available in five separate colors across the spectrum. For entertainment, the Surface converts into two separate cameras for taking pictures. The Surface also features dual microphones and stereo speakers for chatting via Skype.

With the Surface, youngsters can now carry a portable device for studying digital text, taking notes, and typing up assignments through Office programming and online Cloud file management. Over time, the portfolio of Windows-based applications will grow to fully customize the Surface experience.

To date, Microsoft executives remain mum on pricing for the Surface tablet. According to Forbes, Microsoft would sell its Surface tablet for $200. This $200 price point is likely reserved for the low-end Windows RT Surface at 32GB in storage. The premium Windows 8 Pro Surface at 128GB may retail for more than $500. Microsoft has a track record of launching product at cost, in order to steal share and generate future cash flow through its Office 365 subscription model.

The Bottom Line

The Microsoft Surface will make inroads within the tablet market through education. Still, shareholders will quickly discover that Microsoft's tablet revenue is not likely to trickle down to the bottom line and power significant growth for shareholders. Microsoft is a $260-billion corporation, where profits have stalled out at $17 billion over the past five years. Microsoft stock will continue its record as a beta follower that tracks the S&P 500 Index and routinely issues out fatter dividend checks every year.

Success for the Surface tablet actually threatens to cannibalize the PC market, where Microsoft primarily earns its keep through Windows software licensing. In terms of units sold, analyst Richard Shim projects that the tablet will overtake the PC during the year 2016. According to Shim's calculations, original equipment makers (OEMs) will ship out more than 350 million tablets in 2016.

Apple stands alone as the ideal investment to leverage today's tablet revolution. For the third quarterly period ended June 30, 2012, Apple sold 17 million iPads. By units sold, this Q3 2012 performance is an 84% increase above the year-over-year period. Last quarter, the iPad accounted for $9.2 billion of Apple's total $35 billion in revenue. The iPad alongside the iPhone are the primary drivers behind Apple's four-year average of 66% annual growth. As an added bonus, Apple closed out last quarter with $117.2 billion in cash and investment securities on the books. This cash position calculates out to $125 on a per share basis. At today's $660, Apple stock trades for fifteen times earnings and is relatively cheap.

The iPhone 5 and iPad will continue to power Apple's bottom line through 2013. For 2013, I am projecting $50 billion net income, or roughly $53 in earnings per share for Apple. This earnings estimate, when taken alongside Apple's current multiple establishes a one-year price target at $800.

Disclosure: I am long AAPL. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Fabled AP Saigon team thins, with 4 recent deaths

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? It's been a cruel year for the fabled generation of reporters that covered the Vietnam War for The Associated Press.

Tenacious correspondent George Esper died in February, writer Roy Essoyan a month later. Legendary photographer Horst Faas passed away in May.

Malcolm Browne, who took an iconic image of a South Vietnamese monk engulfed in flames, died on Monday.

Former Saigon bureau chief Richard Pyle said in an email Wednesday "we have lost four journalistic legends from the great AP Saigon bureau this year, and I fear we are running out of them."

Their deaths represent the slipping away of a generation of war reporters that brought the reality of the conflict to the living rooms of America in often horrifying close-up and inspired scores of combat journalists in their wake.

New cancer drug is ten times more potent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Legend has it that Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door." University of Missouri researchers are doing just that, but instead of building mousetraps, the scientists are targeting cancer drugs. In a new study, MU medicinal chemists have taken an existing drug that is being developed for use in fighting certain types of cancer, added a special structure to it, and created a more potent, efficient weapon against cancer.

"Over the past decade, we have seen an increasing interest in using carboranes in drug design," said Mark W. Lee Jr., assistant professor of chemistry in College of Arts and Science. "Carboranes are clusters of three elements -- boron, carbon and hydrogen. Carboranes don't fight cancer directly, but they aid in the ability of a drug to bind more tightly to its target, creating a more potent mechanism for destroying the cancer cells."

In the study, Lee and his research team used carboranes to build new drugs designed to shut off a cancer cell's energy production, which is vital for the cell's survival. All cells produce energy through complex, multi-step processes. The key to an effective drug is targeting the process that cancer cells depend on more than healthy cells. By increasing the binding strength of a drug, a smaller dose is required, minimizing side effects and increasing the effectiveness of the therapy. With carboranes, Lee found that the drug is able to bind 10 times more powerfully.

"The reason why these drugs bind stronger to their target is because carboranes exploit a unique and very strong form of hydrogen bonding, the strongest form of interactions for drugs," Lee said.

Lee said that this discovery also will lead to further uses for the drug.

"Too often, after radiation or chemotherapy, cancer cells repair themselves and reinvade the body," Lee said. "This drug not only selectively shuts off the energy production for the cancer cells, but it also inhibits the processes that allow those cancer cells to repair themselves. When we tested our carborane-based drugs, we found that they were unimaginably potent. So far, we have tested this on breast, lung and colon cancer, all with exceptional results."

According to Lee, this is the first study to show systematically how carboranes can improve the activity of a drug. Lee believes this discovery will open additional possibilities of improving drugs that are used to treat other diseases, not just cancer.

"The end result is that these new drugs could be many thousands of times more potent than the drugs that are used in the clinics today," Lee said.

While it will be several years before the new drug would be available on the market, Lee said that clinical trials could begin within the next two years. Additionally, further testing on other types of cancer is underway. The study was published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden pulls back the veil on the secret operations conducted almost nightly by elite American forces against terrorist suspects.

Former SEAL Matt Bissonnette's account contradicted in key details the account of the raid presented by administration officials in the days after the May 2011 raid in Abbotabad, Pakistan, that killed the al-Qaida leader, and raised questions about whether the SEALs followed to the letter the order to use deadly force only if they deemed him a threat.

Bissonnette wrote that the SEALs spotted bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and shot him in the head even though they could not tell whether he was armed. Administration officials have described the SEALs shooting bin Laden only after he ducked back into a bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

Military experts said Wednesday that if Bissonnette's recollection is accurate, the SEALS made the right call to open fire on the terrorist mastermind who had plenty of time to reach for a weapon or explosives as they made their way up to the third level of the house where he hid.

Bissonnette wrote the book, "No Easy Day," under the pseudonym Mark Owen as one of the men in the room when they killed bin Laden. The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.

For years, the primary weapon in the war on terror has been unmanned drones firing missiles from the sky. But the Bissonnette book reveals a more bloody war waged by special operators, one the public almost never gets to see close up.

The book offers intimate details of a special operations mission. The most memorable scenes are also the most human moments. Bissonnette describes one of the SEALs dressing the wounds of a woman who was shot when she lunged toward the raiders. In another scene, a terrified mother clutches her child, and a young girl identifies the dead man to the SEALs as Osama bin Laden, seemingly unaware of the significance of those words.

In that regard, the bin Laden raid seems destined to become an anachronism. Nearly every top al-Qaida figure killed by the United States since the 9/11 attacks has died in a remote-controlled strike by unmanned drone aircraft ? their deaths seen back in Washington via high-definition video. An estimated 80 top terrorist leaders have been killed in places like Pakistan and Yemen, according to The Long War Journal.com, which tracks such airborne strikes.

Special operations troops often conduct raids similar to the bin Laden strike a dozen times a night in Afghanistan, and previously in Iraq, killing thousands of mostly mid- and lower-level terrorists. It's all part of a war on terror that is winding down and giving way to the drone war outside traditional war zones, given the scheduled drawdown of most U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

"No Easy Day" shows how routine such operations have become. But the public rarely hears about them. This raid to capture bin Laden, though, was historic.

The SEALS, according to Bissonnette's description, were prepared as they had been in other raids for a gunfight in close quarters, which likely would last only a few seconds, with no margin for error. By the time the SEALs reached the top floor of bin Laden's compound, roughly 15 minutes had passed, giving the terror leader adequate time to strap on a suicide vest or get a gun, he said.

Bissonnette says he was behind the point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two silenced shots fired by the first SEAL into the hallway. He wrote that the SEAL on point had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway, but Bissonnette could not tell from his vantage point whether the bullets hit the target.

The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find him crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.

Once they wiped the blood off his face, they were convinced it was bin Laden.

The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor late Tuesday would not comment on the apparent contradiction between the administration's account and the book's version.

Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said if bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.

"If they didn't feel like there was a threat, they would have captured him," co-author Kevin Maurer told the AP on Wednesday. "But from when they first hit the ground, all the way until they got to the third deck, they had encountered armed men, which made the use of force essential," said Maurer, a former AP reporter.

A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force defended the decision to shoot the man the SEALs saw in the hallway.

"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," said the former JAG, retired Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.

Bissonnette writes that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid. But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

In an interview scheduled to air Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Bissonnette said the book was "not political whatsoever" and not timed to influence the upcoming national elections. He said it was to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and credit those whose work made the mission to get bin Laden a success.

"My worry from the beginning is, you know, it's a political season. This book is not political whatsoever. It doesn't bad-mouth either party, and we specifically chose Sept. 11 to keep it out of the politics. If these ? crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, then shame on them."

CBS said Bissonnette was disguised and his voice altered for the interview. The network used only his pseudonym and not his name.

The Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information, and could take legal action against Bissonnette.

In a statement provided to the AP, the SEAL author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

The book does include information not previously reported about specific CIA officers' involvement in the raid.

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Dad | Meanwhile, at the Manse

This photo of Dad was taken just a short time before he died in December 2004. It was taken by Lance Crossley, then a reporter with the Minden (Ont.) Times, who did a really nice feature story on Dad?s project of building stone fences at the family farm. We thought Lance?s photo did a wonderful job of showing the real Wendell, and we placed it on Dad?s casket at the funeral visitation. I also used it to accompany the piece I wrote about him for the Globe and Mail?s Lives Lived column.

I?ve mentioned my father, Wendell Sedgwick, many times in the months since I started this blog, starting with explaining that the whole reason I grew up in the Manse in Queensborough was that Dad was the minister at the United Church of Canada?s Queensborough Pastoral Charge between 1964 and 1975. But I feel that despite all the references, I haven?t really said very much about him. It?s oddly difficult; Dad meant so much to all of us in his family, and when we talk about him amongst ourselves we don?t have to recount what he was like. It is deep shared knowledge, something that unites us without having to be voiced. So how to voice it?

Today, the day that would have been Dad?s 81st birthday, I wanted to try.

I thought I could at least start by sharing this piece I wrote for the Lives Lived column in The Globe and Mail. It was published on June 28, 2005, a little over six months after Dad?s death. I found it difficult to write, but I felt I owed him that small tribute. And I knew he would have been pleased, because he was a devoted lifelong reader of (and frequent letter-writer to) The Globe. Here it is.

Farmer, forester, minister. Born Aug. 29, 1931, on the family farm near Gelert, Ont. Died Dec. 11, 2004, on the family farm, in an accident, aged 73.

?So much to do and so little time in which to do it.? Anyone who knew Wendell Sedgwick well had heard him say that hundreds of times. He always said it in a sad way ? mournfully, really. Work was the defining theme of Wendell?s life. He knew he could never finish all that he felt he had to do. But he never stopped trying.

In his mid-20s, he left the farm to attend the University of Toronto and become a United Church of Canada minister. He seemed to feel an urgency to do as much with his life as he could. He had probably thought a lot about the parable in which Jesus tells his listeners it is their Creator?s will that they make the most of the talents they have been given.

Wendell had talents in abundance. He read voraciously, and had a startling memory for what he had read. He could recite poetry by heart from an apparently bottomless repertoire. (He also made up poems, generally funny ones, on the spot, never having to pause to think about what the next line would be.) He had shone in all subjects at school. And he was athletic, tall and strong.

For most of his 33-year ministry in rural central Ontario, Wendell conducted three services each Sunday. He was a commanding presence in the pulpit, uncompromising in his faith and his sense of right and wrong. But he was never self-righteous. He once told a newspaper reporter: ?I know my own failings and preach to that, and the people usually have some of the same feelings.? And just as he preached a God of love and forgiveness, he was slow to judge others, always looking for (and generally finding) the best in people.

It must have helped in his ministry that, because of his farming background, he understood the life his parishioners led. His visits to people?s homes in his capacity as clergyman were more than likely to end in a discussion of what to do about a sick calf or troublesome piece of equipment. He was someone people naturally turned to in time of need, and not just spiritual need.

Ever since he had left home for university, there had been the question of who would maintain the Sedgwick farm. The answer turned out to be: Wendell. Throughout his ministry, every July (officially his ?vacation?) plus two days a week whenever possible the rest of the year, he was there, working from dawn until long after dark, trying to do in a few hours and weeks what it would take anyone else the full year to accomplish.

When he ?retired? in 1997 he could devote himself full-time to the farm. He built up his herd of beef cattle. He spent a lot of time in the bush, clearing out dead and dying trees (to make way for new, healthier growth) and turning them into lumber on his sawmill. He made maple syrup. He plowed and planted and harvested. He built a fence of the stones from his rocky fields.

Wendell?s sudden death was a wrenching blow to his family and a wide circle of friends, neighbours and former parishioners. He was a person to whom many looked for wisdom, guidance and help, and it was ? and is ? hard to imagine life without him. But none who knew him, especially his children, will forget the lessons he taught through example, about being honest and generous, and always doing your best, and working hard.

And there is an odd but real comfort in the fact that when he died, he was doing what he always wanted to be doing: working on the farm.

Katherine is the eldest of Wendell?s four children.

The Good And The Bad Of Public And Private Rehab Centers

People who suffer from drug abuse have difficulty in deciding whether to seek treatment or not because of a variety of reasons. These may include problems or concerns on the kind of treatment they will get. Even if they have decided to seek treatment, the choice of whether to enter a government sponsored treatment facility over a private treatment center is still a big consideration. It is therefore important to discuss the different advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in a government treatment facility and a private treatment center.

Cost and Services

It is quite obvious that government sponsored treatment centers offer treatment services at a lower cost compared to private facilities. However, there are many private treatment centers that offer reasonable prices for rehab. Services provided by government rehab centers are the basics which include detox and counseling. Those who seek treatment in a government facility should not expect high end services and great physical amenities. Private centers on the other hand can provide a variety of extra activities to help patients in the treatment process. Private centers also have bigger space and well maintained spaces since they have the funds to support a significant number of employees.

Waiting Time

Due to the low cost of treatment in government rehab centers, there are many people who enroll in the program. The problem in this case is that all of them could not be accommodated in one time. Others will have to be put on a waiting until one patient has finished rehab and another one can take his place. Waiting can be difficult for many drug addicts who seek treatment. There have been a great number of cases where they can't stand waiting and no longer find interest in seeking treatment. Private institutions are an advantage when waiting time is considered. The number of patients enrolled matches the number of personnel hired. If cost is not a problem, seeking immediate treatment at a private center is indeed beneficial.

Staffing

Both government and private treatment centers hire qualified and professional personnel. Those who wish to enter a government sponsored facility can be assured of skilled practitioners helping them during the whole treatment process. One edge of government treatment centers is that patients are entitled to a refund if treatment is unsuccessful or questionable. Since it's a government facility, accountability of how the money is spent for treatment is very transparent. Those who seek treatment in private facilities can have the benefits of having more attendants and counselors in different activities because there are plenty of employees to assist doctors and other clinicians.

France ready to recognise Syria opposition government

French President Francois Hollande stepped up pressure on Syria Monday, saying France would recognise a provisional government and warning of a foreign intervention if the regime uses chemical weapons.

In a speech to French diplomats, Hollande called for an "intensification of efforts for the political transition to take place quickly" and urged the Syrian opposition to form a "provisional, inclusive and representative" government.

"France will recognise the provisional government of the new Syria as soon as it is formed," he said.

Washington, however, reacted that before setting up a government the Syrian opposition first needed to coordinate with citizens inside and outside the country and set a democratic path.

"So that's the first order of business -- for them to all agree on what a transition ought to look like. Obviously, it's a matter for them to decide if and when they may be prepared to start naming folks," said US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

Hollande was on the same page with the United States and Britain when he warned the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that using chemical weapons would be a legitimate reason for a foreign intervention.

"We with our allies remain very watchful to prevent the use of chemical weapons by the regime, which would be for the international community a legitimate cause for direct intervention," Hollande said.

Hollande also confirmed France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of buffer zones within Syria to receive people displaced by the conflict and prevent them flooding over the borders into neighbouring states.

Turkey in particular has been pushing for such a move, which would require military back-up to ensure the security of the refugees.

"We are working ... (on) the initiative of buffer zones proposed by Turkey," Hollande said, adding that "we are doing so in coordination with our closest partners."

Hollande said the opposition of Russia and China to action against the Syrian regime was weakening the United Nations.

"I am saying to Russia and to China that their attitude in the Syria crisis is weakening our capacity to fulfill the mandate given us by the United Nations charter," he said.

"Our country only participates in operations to keep the peace or protect civilians by virtue of a mandate and therefore a resolution of the United Nations Security Council," Hollande said.

"For this the (Security Council) members must take their responsibility to allow it to take decisions," he said.

Hollande said resolving the Syria crisis was crucial not only for the country itself but for the region as a whole.

"I know the difficulty of the task, I understand the risks, but the stakes go beyond Syria. This concerns the security of all the Middle East and in particular the independence and stability of Lebanon," he said.

Hollande also touched on Iran in the speech outlining his foreign policy priorities, saying it was unacceptable for Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons and warning of new sanctions.

"It would be unacceptable for Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon and this country must meet its international obligations," Hollande said.

"As long as Iran does not answer all questions (on its nuclear programme) and does not conform to international law, it is France's responsibility to further increase sanctions against the Iranian regime."

Dance Samir likely to win William Hill supporting Racing Post TV Stakes

Dance Samir is all set to give a tough time to his opponents in the William Hill supporting Racing Post TV Stakes at Newcastle in England on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. He will not find things to be easy at all, but there is a solid chance for him to win a cash prize of ?133 from the Grade A1 event.

The 480 metres flat race, which is scheduled to start at 21:22 GMT, will definitely test the speed and stamina of all participants. There are some extremely talented runners lined up for action and they will make the competition interesting.

Looking at the overall statistics of all the greyhounds, it seems that the real battle will be amongst Mr Monkey and Dance Samir. Both are extremely skilful runners and will not make life easy for each other.

The former of the above two hounds has been given a general starting price of 15 to 8, which suggests that the bookmakers have got immense confidence in his abilities. He does not have a lot of experience, but has been competitive in most of the events he took part in. He was victorious in his most recent outing. Due to this, the punters will definitely be interested in risking some money on him.

On the other hand, Dance Samir cannot be taken lightly at all, as he has got the speed to surprise his opponents at any point in the race. He moved to Newcastle recently and seems to like the conditions at this venue. He will enter the event with a starting price of 7 to 2 and is likely to attract a few bets today.

The G. Carmichael?s trained dog made his debut in December 2011 and took part in just a few trial events back then. He took part in competitive racing at the start of 2012 and his performances were extremely good back then.

The blue and brindle runner took part in his first Grade OR event in March and finished as a runner up that time around. He kept on displaying solid speed from then onwards and is full of confidence at the moment. He secured the second place in his most recent run as well and his fans will once again be expecting him to be competitive.

App.net causes a HooHa with its first Android app

It's a good time for confusingly-named App.net, hot on the heels of smashing its funding goal and cooking up its first terms of service, the paid-Twitter startup now has an Android mobile client. HooHa chief Deniz Veli told The Next Web that he cooked up the software after seeing a "thriving developer community" surrounding the new service -- with many presumably encouraged by Twitter's recent API changes. Like the service itself, the app is only an Alpha release, but you can download it for free at the Play Store, no need to causes a hoo-hah (geddit?).

Fla. prepares for Isaac on eve of GOP convention

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The site of the National Republican Convention showed no signs of a coming deluge Saturday, even as the approaching Tropical Storm Isaac sent officials across the state into full-scale preparation mode.

Streets were already shut down around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, where former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will accept his party's presidential nomination Thursday night. Law enforcement milled about downtown, and some protests already were under way. One group protesting homelessness and the housing crisis "took over" a foreclosed home by cleaning the yard and planned to help a homeless couple move in.

Convention officials announced Saturday evening that they planned to convene the convention briefly on Monday, then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm is expected to have passed. Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, declared a state of emergency and canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

A hurricane warning had been issued for the Florida Keys, and officials warned tourists to leave. Forecast models show Isaac likely won't hit Tampa head-on, but it could lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up.

"I told some of my Democratic friends, 'We are the storm, baby, we are the thunder,'" said Steve Linder, whose business is planning all events for the Michigan delegation. Linder added, smiling, "and it ain't gonna stop until November."

Dianne Joachim of New Richmond, Wis., was in town for her first convention and vowed not to let Isaac ruin it.

"I just figure God's got this," she said as she arrived at her downtown hotel.

Scott said during a media briefing that delegates were being told how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention. He also said he was in close communication with local, state and federal agencies, as well as convention officials.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," the governor said.

Isaac was blamed for at least three deaths after dousing flood-prone Haiti and was expected to scrape eastern Cuba on Saturday. It was forecast to hit the Keys late Sunday or early Monday, and it then could bring stormy conditions to Florida's west coast before moving to the Panhandle.

Isaac was expected to pass over the Keys as a hurricane late Sunday or early Monday. A steady stream of cars moved north along the Overseas Highway on Saturday, but officials said there were no major problems as some evacuated. At spots of higher ground along the highway, the only road connecting the Keys, dozens of people parked their cars to escape flooding.

At The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, workers were moving recovering turtles from outdoor tanks inside, and hospital founder Richie Moretti said warnings were being taken seriously. He noted Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was initially expected to hit as a Category 1 storm, too.

"It took out the motel, the hospital, the docks, and all the boats. So, I don't take anything for granted. If there's a storm coming, I don't care what number they give it. We're going to batten down and be ready," he said.

Volunteers carried in supplies at shelters throughout the Keys. On Duval Street, the famed tourist strip in Key West, many shops were boarded up. Bands of light rain moved through and passersby crowded under umbrellas and wore ponchos and slickers.

"The weather sucks, but on Tuesday it'll be nice," said an optimistic Kelly Calhoun, a 30-year-old speech therapist at the start of a weeklong vacation to Key West with family. "We got all the essentials: booze and food."

Yet the storm was days away from the Florida Panhandle. It was sunny and breezy on the beach Saturday in Pensacola, with people out strolling and playing in the sand. Condo associations told people to move furniture inside, but full-scale preparations hadn't yet begun. Waves weren't yet big enough for surfers.

When the storm hits, strong winds will be "enough to knock you over" and produce severe thunderstorms, National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.

Storm surge and tornadoes also are possible when Isaac hits, and winds could topple power lines and lead to lengthy power outages, Feltgen said. The Panhandle already has had a wet summer, so potential flooding was especially possible there.

Schools, airports, parks and beaches across South Florida closed ahead of the storm. In the Florida Keys, officials said they would open storm shelters and urged vacationers to leave. State officials warned Isaac was a massive storm ? even though the eye may not pass over Tampa, tropical storm-force winds extended 230 miles from the center.

Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual.

Police said even heavy rain could reduce the protesters' ranks, and could also bring relief from another worry: extreme heat.

Five Fails in Multi-Channel Communications

No matter whether you are using one communication platform with your stakeholders (staff, volunteers, donors, etc.) or many, your organization needs to connect any and all communication strategies to larger goals and plans. We live in a world where there is a plethora of ways to communicate and nonprofits are asked to know as many of those communication tools as possible to reach a wide audience.

If you are using print media, web 1.0 media, social media, and/or mobile media these foundational concepts apply to you!

At the end of the say, your job is to determine strategies that will best serve your mission and your community.? Research, learn, and plan around each new tool and you?re more likely to fin multi-channel communications success.

1. Take only one tool from the toolbox

asdablog.com

No organization should completely rely on one tool in their multi-channel communications toolbox to solve their communications needs. There is no magic wand here ? no one platform is going to answer the needs of all your stakeholders. If that was the case, we all would stick to one strategy and learn it inside and out.

Social media or direct mail appeals or e-newsletters or mobile texts are just another tool in the marketing and fundraising toolbox that you can use. As nonprofits, we are asked to know a great deal about a number of these tools and there will be more to learn!

All of these tools help to reach out to stakeholders ? donors, volunteers, prospective board members and more. We can raise funds, get the message out, and build support for our cause. Learn about the various tools available and pick the right ones for your goals and objectives.

2. Put off planning

planonthenet.com

I cannot emphasize this enough. Build any of your strategies into existing plans such as a strategic plan, fundraising plan, or marketing plan will help to leverage greater investment across the organization as well set a clear road map for success.

You will be able to more effectively keep everyone in the organization on the same page, adjust the strategy, and implement consistently regardless of the communications tool. ?The plan should also cover how you will manage your strategies ? that is, will you bring on volunteers? Staff? Consultant?

Be careful to rely solely on one person to take responsibility for all communications. Just like fundraising, everyone in leadership roles should play and important part in raising funds, serving as ambassadors for the organization, and sharing the organization?s story. Having a plan will help keep your multi-channel communications efforts growing and thriving.

3. Wait on ?watering? your communications

itasca.com

I compare multi-channel communications strategies to watering a plant. That is, you cannot simply create a Twitter account or sign up for mobile communications, for example, and expect people to follow you. You need to water that ?plant? ? take 10 ? 20 minutes a day to begin with planning and populating your communications platforms. What is the message that you want to get out to your stakeholders and the community? This should be covered in your communications plan. Watering the communications plan a little every day will help to create a foundation under which you can grow. Creating a calendar for communication activities often helps.

4. Discourage dialogue

englishinteractive.net

One of the best things about communications like texting and social media is that there is potential for dialogue. A direct mail appeal can?t do this in the same way that a blog can. Share news and opinions, take risks, and be ready for dissent and support. Your organization is trying to enhance engagement and you should be willing to share oppositional (not inappropriate) comments that challenge your opinions. This is how strong dialogue begins. Your nonprofit can respond directly to positive or challenging feedback, but allowing that space means you are open to the community. Of course, inappropriate or demeaning language is never acceptable.

5. Bail on boundaries

universalflag.com

It is important to have some insurance when it comes to your interactive communications. Very infrequently have I seen posts, comments, etc. that are inappropriate for the platform, but you want to be prepared. Be sure to outline the purpose of each of your communications tools, how best to use the tools, what is acceptable, and what will not be tolerated including spam. Always reserve the right to ask someone not to participate or block them from commenting. A good example is a nonprofit network I consult for ? it is not appropriate to post information that is related to real estate on the nonprofit-focused network. Be sure to have action steps clearly outlined in your policy when someone has violated that policy.

What are some fails you?ve seen in multi-channel communications? What pitfalls would you recommend others avoid? Share your story and ideas here!

Non-smokers benefit most from smoking ban

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Many European countries have passed anti-smoking legislation which bans smoking from restaurants, bars and public buildings. After implementation of such a smoking ban on 1 January 2008 in the metropolitan area of Bremen in northwest Germany (800,000 inhabitants) a 16% decline in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) was observed. STEMI is the severest form of myocardial infarction.

For the study, 3,545 STEMIs in the Bremen-STEMI-Registry which occurred between 2006 and 2010 were analyzed.? Dr Schmucker said: "There were more non-smokers than smokers, which explains why the non-smokers group had more STEMIs registered."

For the total population in 2006 and 2007, before the smoking ban was passed, averages of 65 STEMIs were registered per month. In 2008 to 2010, after the smoking ban was passed, the number fell by 16% to an average of 55 STEMIs per month. "This confirms that the smoking ban had a positive impact on the population as a whole by decreasing the number of STEMIs," said Dr Schmucker.

A nearly constant rate of STEMIs was observed in active smokers during 2006-2010. In 2006-2007 active smokers had an average of 25 STEMIs per month. In 2008-2010, they had an average of 26 STEMIs per month, a 4% increase. Dr Schmucker said: "Active smokers are inhaling such high doses of tobacco smoke that being exposed to less passive smoke in public venues is not going to change the risk for that particular group."

In non-smokers there was a 26% decrease in STEMIs, from an average of 39 STEMIs per month in 2006-2007 to an average of 29 STEMIs per month in 2008-2010. The steepest decline in the non-smoking group was detected in young non-smokers; in this group the average number of STEMIs per month was 31% lower in 2008-2010 compared to 2006-2007.

"The reduction in the occurrence of this severest and deadliest form of myocardial infarction in the metropolitan area of Bremen can be partially attributed to the commencement of anti-smoking legislation," said Dr Schmucker. "Non-smokers and especially non-smokers under the age of 65 benefited most from the implementation of the law, indicating the harmful effects of passive smoking. This suggests that expanding anti-smoking legislation could reduce the occurrence of STEMIs even further in the future."
