iPhone vs Android

Rocketboom takes to Washington Square Park in New York City to survey mobile phone preferences in the growing war between Apple's iPhone and Google's Android. Which do you prefer? iPhone or Android?

FAQ: "Sounds like they were holding a biased poll... only asking android users why." We asked a lot of iPhones users why too, but their answers were typically not interesting so we edited them out. But it is true, we did ask more people "why" when they said Android. We were curious. Rocketboom has throughly covered the iPhone. Android? Not so much. Asking why did not change people's answers.

FAQ: "but...but....Android has more market share, this must be biased". Some insightful commenters have pointed out that this survey takes place in a specific location that is not representative of all of America or the World. This is just a certain section of a big city surrounded by a prestigious University.

Fighter's release fuels fears of ethnic violence in Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - An ethnic Dagestani martial arts fighter was spared jail on Tuesday by a Moscow court that found him guilty of the manslaughter of an ethnic Russian in a case that could fuel protests on the anniversary of nationalist riots.

Riot police were on alert after the ruling and restricted access to Manezh square, scene of Moscow's worst ethnic violence in post-Soviet history on December 11, 2010.

Police detained several nationalists outside the court where some were shouting chants urging people to gather in Manezh square again, RBC news agency said.

The violence in 2010 was triggered by a killing of soccer fan Yegor Sviridov by a group of migrants from the Northern Caucasus, which includes Dagestan, and nationalists are planning rallies on the anniversary.

President Vladimir Putin is facing a difficult balancing act between rising Russian nationalism and the interests of national republics with large ethnic diasporas in big cities.

Some analysts regard radical nationalism as the single biggest threat faced by the country, which is home to more than 160 distinct national and ethnic groups.

Professional fighter Rasul Mirzayev, who fought under the name "Black Tiger", killed ethnic Russian Ivan Agafonov in August 2011 in a brawl outside a Moscow night club.

The court ruled that Mirzayev had used his skills when hitting Agafonov, who fell on the pavement injuring his head, lost consciousness and later died in hospital.

Under the conditions of his release, Mirzayev will have to regularly report to police and stay in his home region.

"I was really very surprised, I did not think I would be released, I was sure that I would stay in jail," Mirzayev told Lifenews Internet portal from his courtroom cell. "First thing I want is to go see my mother and daughter."

Agafonov's relatives, who shouted "shame, shame" when the fighter was ushered out of court after the judge read the verdict, said they would appeal against the decision.

Riot police restricted access to the square after some nationalist politicians warned of the possibility of new riots. Interfax news agency said similar calls were made by nationalist on social networks.

"People's discontent is rising. One should not forget that December 11 is the Manezh square anniversary," said nationalist politician Alexander Belov.

Putin remained silent on the court ruling on Tuesday. After the 2010 riots Putin, then prime minister, sought to pacify soccer fans by laying flowers at the grave of the murdered fan.

Aslan Cherkesov, the man who killed Sviridov, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

A study led by academics at the University of Bristol's Intelligent Systems Laboratory and the School of Journalism at Cardiff University have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to analyse 2.5 million articles from 498 different English-language online news outlets over ten months.

The researchers found that:

As expected, readability measures show that online tabloid newspapers are more readable than broadsheets and use more sentimental language. Among 15 US and UK newspapers, the Sun is the easiest to read, comparable to the BBC's children's news programme, Newsround, while the Guardian is the most difficult to read. 'Sport' and 'Arts' were the most readable topics while 'Politics' and 'Environment' were the least readable.

The Sun is also the most likely to use adjectives with sentiment, while the Wall Street Journal uses the fewest emotional adjectives.

The study found that men dominated the content of newspapers during the period analysed. The ranking of topics based on the gender bias of the articles found 'Sport' and 'Financial' articles were the most male biased, with sports news mentioning men eight times more often than women. 'Fashion' and 'Arts' were the least biased, with 'Fashion' articles being one the few topics featuring equal proportions of men and women.

The most appealing topics to online readers were 'Disasters', 'Crime', and the 'Environment' while the least appealing topics were 'Fashion', 'Markets' and 'Prices'. The researchers also found that the popular articles tend to be more readable and more linguistically subjective.

Nello Cristianini, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bristol, speaking about the research, said: "The automation of many tasks in news content analysis will not replace the human judgement needed for fine-grained, qualitative forms of analysis, but it allows researchers to focus their attention on a scale far beyond the sample sizes of traditional forms of content analysis."

Professor Justin Lewis, Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff, added: "Even some of the more predictable findings give us pause for thought. The extent to which news is male dominated shows how far we are from gender equity across most areas of public life. The fact that articles about politics are the least readable might also explain widespread public disengagement."

The study is published online in Digital Journalism.

Abortion refusal: New inquiry into woman's death

Hundreds of women in Ireland are protesting, calling for legislative change after the death of Savita Halappanavar, who died after her requests for an abortion were rejected by her Irish doctors. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

By Lorraine Turner and Conor Humphries, Reuters

DUBLIN, Ireland - Ireland has opened a new investigation into the death of a woman denied an abortion of her dying foetus, as the government scrambled to stem criticism of its handling of an incident that polarised the overwhelmingly Catholic country.

Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old dentist, was admitted to hospital in severe pain on Oct. 21 and asked for a termination after doctors said her baby would not survive, according to her husband, but in a country with some of the world's most restrictive abortion laws, surgeons would not remove the foetus until its heartbeat stopped days later.

He husband, Praveen Halappanavar believes the delay contributed to the blood poisoning that killed his wife on Oct. 28. He has said he would not cooperate with an investigation already launched by the country's health service because he did not believe it would be neutral.

On Friday, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) watchdog, which is government-funded but independent of the state health service, said it had also launched an investigation after receiving information from the health service and University Hospital Galway, where Halappanavar died.

A solicitor acting on behalf of the husband said the new inquiry was unlikely to be enough to satisfy his client.

"My client has always made his position very clear ... He wants a public inquiry. He has made it clear he wants to get to the truth of the matter, so I don't think that the framework of HIQA will suffice," Gerard O'Donnell, told RTE radio.

Savita Halappanavar is shown in a photo received from the Irish Times.

He added that the next step would be to consider an application to the European Court of Human Rights, which criticized Ireland's abortion ban in 2010.

Halappanavar's death has reopened a decades-long debate over whether the government should legislate to explicitly allow abortion when the life of the mother is at risk.

Irish law does not specify exactly when the threat to the life of the mother is high enough to justify a termination, leaving doctors to decide. Critics say this means doctors' personal beliefs can play a role.

Though the influence of the Catholic Church over Irish politics has waned since the 1980s, successive governments have been loath to legislate on an issue they fear could alienate conservative voters.

Ireland's abortion stance is enshrined in a 1983 constitutional amendment that intended to ban abortion in all circumstances. In 1992, when challenged in the "X-case" involving a 14-year-old rape victim, the Supreme Court ruled that abortion was permitted when the woman's life was at risk, including from suicide.

But successive governments refused to make clear the circumstances under which a threat would make an abortion legal. After several challenges, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2010 that Ireland must clarify its position.

Prime Minister Enda Kenny, whose ruling Fine Gael party made an election pledge not to introduce new laws allowing abortion, said last week he would not be rushed into a decision on the issue.

The government was forced into an embarrassing u-turn this week when it removed three Galway-based consultants from the health service inquiry following criticism from Praveen Halappanavar.

The issue has raised tensions between Fine Gael and the more socially liberal Labour Party, its junior coalition partner, which has campaigned for a clarification of the country's abortion rules.

The country's president, Michael D. Higgins, a former member of the Labour Party, weighed into the debate this week when he said an investigation was needed that satisfied the dead woman's family.

Opposition party Sinn Fein introduced a motion to parliament on Wednesday calling for parliament to legislate on abortion, but it was rejected.

"Successive governments over the past 20 years have failed in respect of legislation. That failure is in large measure due to fear or cowardice," said Mary Lou McDonald, vice president of Sinn Fein.?

A look at key US Sanctions against Myanmar

(AP) ? The United States is unwinding two decades of sanctions against Myanmar, as the country's reformist leadership oversees rapid-fire economic and political change. President Barack Obama's visit this week, the first by a serving U.S. president, is a sign of how far relations have come. But Washington continues to take a calibrated approach to easing sanctions, keen to retain leverage should Myanmar's reform momentum stall.

Here's a look at key elements of U.S. sanctions against Myanmar.

Why did the U.S. sanction Myanmar in the first place?

? Washington first enacted sanctions in September 1988, the month after Myanmar's military junta cracked down on peaceful protests, killing thousands. The U.S. responded to deepening human rights violations and brutal suppression of the democratic opposition by tightening sanctions.

Why has the U.S. eased sanctions?

? U.S. policy began to change after Myanmar's president, Thein Sein, took office in March 2011. As the new government released political prisoners, signed cease-fires with ethnic rebels, opened the economy and held elections that saw opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi take a seat in Parliament, the U.S. normalized diplomatic relations and suspended most major sanctions.

What did the U.S. sanction and which sanctions are still in force?

? Washington banned new investment, financial services, multilateral assistance, and imports. It also barred officials from getting U.S. visas and forbade deals with "crony" businessmen linked to the old regime. Restrictions on most new investment, financial services, multilateral assistance, and most imports from Myanmar have been suspended. The biggest remaining block is the list of "specially designated nationals" and companies that U.S. firms are barred from doing business with because of their alleged links to oppression and corrupt practices.

Why hasn't Washington simply done away with sanctions?

? Washington has taken a carrot and stick approach to retain leverage and reinforce good business practices. Also, they're technically hard to undo. Sanctions are governed by six federal laws and a series of executive orders, often with overlapping provisions. There are also functional bans which require specific benchmarks to be met before certain strictures are eased such as ending the use of child soldiers before arms sales are allowed.

Did sanctions work?

? The jury is out. Advocates point to change in Myanmar as evidence that sanctions encouraged reform. But a large chorus of critics says domestic factors rather than sanctions ? which had little effect for two decades ? are the real reason for Myanmar's spring. Critics also say sanctions have been too blunt, hurting the corrupt elite less than the common man.

Suicide bomber kills 23 people in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A suicide bomber struck a Shiite Muslim procession near Pakistan's capital, killing 23 people in the latest of a series of bombings targeting Shiites during the holiest month of the year for the sect, officials said Thursday.

The bomber attacked the procession around midnight Wednesday in the city of Rawalpindi, located next to the capital, Islamabad, said Deeba Shahnaz, a state rescue official. At least 62 people were wounded by the blast, including six policemen. Eight of the dead and wounded were children, said Shahnaz.

Police tried to stop and search the bomber as he attempted to join the procession, but he ran past them and detonated his explosives, said senior police official Haseeb Shah. The attacker was also carrying grenades, some of which exploded, said Shah.

"I think the explosives combined with grenades caused the big loss," said Shah.

Earlier Wednesday, two bombs went off within minutes outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing at least one person and wounding several others, senior police official Javed Odho said.

The bombings came as Shiites were observing the holy month of Muharram. On Saturday, Shiites will observe the holiest day of the month, Ashoura, which commemorates the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

Sunnis and Shiites have been at odds since the seventh century over the true heir to Muhammad.

Pakistan has a long history of sectarian violence carried out by both extremist Sunni and Shiite Muslims against the opposite sect. Most attacks in recent years have targeted Shiites, who make up a minority in the overwhelmingly Muslim country.

Hitman: Absolution's Contracts Mode Now Free to Play Online ...

Hitman-Absolution

In a rare form of humility from Square Enix, the video game publisher has backtracked on their decision to charge gamers for Hitman: Absolution?s online gaming component at the last minute.

Online gaming passes are now commonplace amongst the biggest AAA selling games of the year from giants like EA, but Square Enix must have realized that their marquis release of the season doesn?t especially have the name power behind it like Madden, Battlefield?or Assassin?s Creed.

Americans will receive the online mode automatically in the game?s main menu from the get go, but the rest of the world will have to use a code packed in with the first shipment of the game to unlock it for free.

?We?d actually planned to have this mode accessible via a code in the game?s box, but we really want to make it available to anybody that plays the game ? so we want to take a new approach.?

Hitman: Absolution has been met with mostly solid praise so far as a more than adequate attempt to modernize a defunct series. Be sure to check out Agent 47 in his latest outing as the most popular bald headed killer on the market, but just be sure not to make his rebirth too successful. You just know Square Enix is looking for an excuse to slap an extra charge on its product somewhere so it be considered in league with the big boys.

Hitman: Absolution is out this week for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Facts about The Creative Recreation Revolution in the realm of ...

In 2002, creative recreation came into existence in the heart of California, Orange County. This was after designers observed the shoe enterprise had a concern and took up the opportunity. They recognized the need for dress shoes that people wished to wear with suits, a trend not necessarily acceptable to most people because of the options. There was no shoe organization providing such shoes to the vibrant people and adolescents in wonderful quality designs also. The makers of the line made-up their mind to fulfill the needs of the youthful demographic and also to get them to trendy.

This ended in the roll-out of Creative Recreation, bringing into the world high-quality designed trainers for people who had difficulties conforming to normal sneakers in some styles thought of as boring. The firm is comparatively new plus a corporation for the youthful with regards to footwear labels manufacturing, although it has also been involved with firing up the ambitions and concepts of individuals in the world of sports and fashion fans. They?re usually releasing innovative shoes ranges to look after the requirements in vogue throughout the year and are also achieving a lot of sales and popularity. The end result has been a large amount of trainer variations, for example Dicoco, Testa, Milano and Cesario.
Cesario is acknowledged for its slim line characteristic silhouette including Velcro straps between the laces and the toe, giving each shoe a sensible feel and appearance. Cesario has some traditional colour tastes such as oil brown, black and white, that includes a breathtaking shine about it and acquired in a low or high top as per the needs of an individual. For the Milano Creative Recreation sneakers, they have silhouettes of very thin lines and hardly have the signature strap of Velcro around but have tied to the lace up type of shoe. It?s available in a low top and high top variation according to the alternatives of an individual. For the Testa, it comes with 3 varieties of Velcro straps without a single lace, contrasting with both Milano and Cesario. It?s also availed in high-top silhouettes only, even though it carries a fairly perfect shape which means it?s ideal for those who wear slender jeans very easily tucked within the shoe.

The trainers from Creative Recreation are specific with regards to design, creative ones which were not provided before. Prior to Creative getting into the field, only two specific shoe types were on the market. There have been sports runners and footwear for all those individuals deeply in love with sports, running or simply people who lived life styles based on instant activity and spent extended periods in the outdoors. You?ll also find semi-casual and workplace sneakers which includes formal situations choices, areas where trainers or sports shoes would perhaps be frowned upon or described as inappropriate.

Prior to the firm being founded, it was challenging to discover a manufacturer that made boots an individual loved wearing in the greater outdoors, formal events or even at home. There was clearly no shoes to have the rough punishment of the outdoors and to look great in them later on in an evening out or supper, in a bar, dancing sessions or even in a pub crawl. This is what Creative Recreation brought to the world of people who really enjoy trainers.

So if you are looking to know more on the subject of
creative recreation and also truly know precisely everything about the topic area then you may want to look at further researching. The straightforward process to achieve this is to click on on the link and have a look at the web site it links to. Take a look at creative recreation today

In Benghazi testimony, Petraeus says al Qaeda role known early

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former CIA Director David Petraeus told Congress on Friday that he and the spy agency had sought to make clear from the outset that September's deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, involved an al Qaeda affiliate, lawmakers said.

Petraeus told the House of Representatives intelligence committee that "there were extremists in the group" that launched the initial attack on the diplomatic mission, describing them as affiliates of al Qaeda and other extremist groups, said Representative C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, the committee's top Democrat. "The fact is that he clarified it."

Another lawmaker, Republican Representative Peter King, said Petraeus' account in the closed-door session differed from the assessment that the CIA chief gave to Congress two months ago, just days after the September 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

"He also stated that he thought all along he made it clear that there were significant terrorist involvement, and that is not my recollection of what he told us on September 14," King said.

Petraeus later appeared before the Senate intelligence panel. His appearances before lawmakers came the week after he quit as CIA chief because of an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Lawmakers said a somber Petraeus told them his resignation had nothing to do with issues related to Benghazi or any reluctance to testify before Congress.

"The general did not address any specifics of the affair, of that issue," Democratic Representative Jim Langevin said. "What he did say in his opening statement was that he regrets the circumstances that led to his resignation."

Petraeus, a retired Army four-star general, slipped into the closed sessions unseen by a swarm of media.

The assault on the U.S. mission in Benghazi has turned into a flash point between President Barack Obama and Republicans, who accuse the White House of misleading the public in the days following the attack.

Some Republicans have suggested that Obama and his aides wanted to downplay the idea they had failed to prevent a terrorist attack, which might have dampened the president's re-election chances on November 6. Obama has denied that implication.

Petraeus' testimony to the House and Senate intelligence committees seems unlikely to dampen the controversy over why the Obama administration had asserted for days after the Benghazi attack that it had sprung from a spontaneous protest prompted by an anti-Muslim film.

Republicans have targeted Obama's U.N. ambassador, Susan Rice, who in five Sunday talk show appearances on September 16 said the assault was prompted by the video and then morphed into a more violent act. But she told CBS's "Face the Nation" that day that it was "clear that there were extremist elements that joined in and escalated the violence."

Rice aides and White House officials have said that she had based her remarks on talking points provided by the CIA.

'A FRIEND'

Lawmakers appeared to treat the question of his personal life with kid gloves. They said the questioning was sometimes awkward against the backdrop of the Broadwell scandal and because some of them have known Petraeus for years and think highly of his military service in which he ran the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"I consider him a friend, which made the questioning tough, to be honest with you," King told reporters.

"I've known him for nine years now. I actually asked him to run for president a few years ago," he said.

The affair has raised questions about whether any classified information was divulged to Broadwell that would affect national security. So far, FBI investigators have not discovered anything to suggest that was the case, law enforcement sources said.

Before his resignation, Petraeus had gone to Libya to interview people about what happened in Benghazi on September 11, when there was a series of escalating attacks on the diplomatic mission and a nearby CIA annex.

Ruppersberger said the committee learned on Thursday during a closed hearing in which it saw a real-time film of the events in Benghazi that the attack on the diplomatic mission was different than the subsequent attack on the nearby annex.

"The first incident was a lot different than the second incident in the annex," he said. The attack on the mission involved looters and people setting buildings on fire, while the attack on the annex was "well-organized" and involved people who had experience in conducting attacks, he said.

Israel hits Hamas government buildings, reservists mobilized

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli aircraft bombed Hamas government buildings in Gaza on Saturday, including the prime minister's office, after Israel's cabinet authorized the mobilization of up to 75,000 reservists in preparation for a possible ground invasion.

Palestinian militants in Gaza kept up cross-border salvoes, firing a rocket at Israel's biggest city Tel Aviv for the third straight day. Police said it was destroyed in mid-air by an Iron Dome anti-missile battery deployed hours earlier, and no one was injured.

Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that runs the Gaza Strip, said Israeli missiles wrecked the office building of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh - where he had met on Friday with the Egyptian prime minister - and struck a police headquarters.

In the Israeli Mediterranean port of Ashdod, a rocket ripped into several balconies. Police said five people were hurt.

With Israeli tanks and artillery positioned along the Gaza border and no end in sight to hostilities now in their fourth day, Tunisia's foreign minister travelled to the enclave in a show of Arab solidarity.

Officials in Gaza said 41 Palestinians, nearly half of them civilians including eight children and a pregnant woman, had been killed since Israel began its air strikes. Three Israeli civilians were killed by a rocket on Thursday.

In Cairo, a presidential source said Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi would hold four-way talks with the Qatari emir, the prime minister of Turkey and Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal in the Egyptian capital on Saturday to discuss the Gaza crisis.

Egypt has been working to reinstate calm between Israel and Hamas after an informal ceasefire brokered by Cairo unraveled over the past few weeks. Meshaal, who lives in exile, has already held a round of talks with Egyptian security officials.

Israel uncorked its massive air campaign on Wednesday with the declared goal of deterring Hamas from launching rockets that have plagued its southern communities for years. The salvoes recently intensified, and are now displaying greater range.

The operation has drawn Western support for what U.S. and European leaders have called Israel's right to self-defense, along with appeals to both sides to avoid civilian casualties.

Hamas, shunned by the West over its refusal to recognize Israel, says its cross-border attacks have come in response to Israeli strikes against Palestinian fighters in Gaza.

"We have not limited ourselves in means or in time," Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Israel's Channel One television. "We hope that it will end as soon as possible, but that will be only after all the objectives have been achieved."

Hamas says it is committed to continued confrontation with Israel and is eager not to seem any less resolute than smaller, more radical groups that have emerged in Gaza in recent years.

The Islamist movement has ruled Gaza since 2007. Israel pulled settlers out of Gaza in 2005 but maintains a blockade of the tiny, densely populated coastal territory.

RESERVE TROOP QUOTA DOUBLED

At a late night session on Friday, Israel's cabinet decided to more than double the current reserve troop quota set for the Gaza offensive to 75,000, political sources said.

The move did not necessarily mean all would be called up or that an invasion would follow. Tanks and self-propelled guns were seen near the sandy border zone on Saturday, and around 16,000 reservists have already been summoned to active duty.

The Gaza conflagration has stirred the pot of a Middle East already boiling from two years of Arab revolution and a civil war in Syria that threatens to spread beyond its borders.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to visit Israel and Egypt next week to push for an end to the fighting in Gaza, U.N. diplomats said on Friday.

Hamas's armed wing claimed responsibility for Saturday's rocket attack on Tel Aviv, saying it had fired a longer-range, Iranian-designed Fajr-5 at the coastal metropolis, some 70 km (43 miles) north of the Gaza Strip.

After air raid sirens sounded, witnesses saw two white plumes rise into the sky over the southern outskirts of Tel Aviv and heard an explosion when the incoming rocket was hit.

The anti-missile battery had been due to take delivery of its fifth Iron Dome battery early next year but it was rushed into service near Tel Aviv after rockets were launched toward the city on Thursday and Friday. Those attacks caused no damage or casualties.

In Jerusalem, targeted by a Palestinian rocket on Friday for the first time in 42 years, there was little outward sign on the Jewish Sabbath that the attack had any impact on the usually placid pace of life in the holy city.

In Gaza, some families abandoned their homes - some of them damaged and others situated near potential Israeli targets - and packed into the houses of friends and relatives.

ISRAEL'S GAZA TARGETS

The Israeli army said it had zeroed in on a number of government buildings during the night, including Haniyeh's office, the Hamas Interior Ministry and a police compound.

Taher al-Nono, a spokesman for the Hamas government, held a news conference near the rubble of the prime minister's office and pledged: "We will declare victory from here."

A three-storey house belonging to Hamas official Abu Hassan Salah was also hit and totally destroyed early on Saturday. Rescuers said at least 30 people were pulled from the rubble.

In Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama commended Egypt's efforts to help defuse the Gaza violence in a call to Mursi on Friday, the White House said in a statement, and underscored his hope of restoring stability there.

On Friday, Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil paid a high-profile visit to Gaza, denouncing what he called Israeli aggression and saying Cairo was prepared to mediate a truce.

Egypt's Islamist government, freely elected after U.S.-backed autocrat Hosni Mubarak fell to a popular uprising last year, is allied with Hamas but Cairo is also party to a 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

In a call to Netanyahu, Obama discussed options for "de-escalating" the situation, the White House said, adding that the president "reiterated U.S. support for Israel's right to defend itself, and expressed regret over the loss of Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives".

Hamas fighters are no match for the Israeli military. The last Gaza war, involving a three-week long Israeli air blitz and ground invasion over the New Year period of 2008-09, killed over 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians. Thirteen Israelis died.

But few believe Israeli military action can snuff out militant rocket fire entirely without a reoccupation of Gaza, an option all but ruled out because it would risk major casualties and an international outcry.

While Hamas rejects the Jewish state's existence, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who rules in areas of the nearby West Bank not occupied by Israelis, does recognize Israel but peace talks between the two sides have been frozen since 2010.

Leonid meteor shower captured by stargazers

The Leonid meteor shower peaked early Saturday, and some night sky watchers caught a great view.

The Leonids are a yearly meteor display of shooting stars that appear to radiate out of the constellation Leo. They are created when Earth crosses the path of debris from the comet Tempel-Tuttle, which swings through the inner solar system every 33 years.

This year, the Leonids are offering an especially good show because the moon is only in its crescent phase right now (so its light isn't too bright to wash out the meteors) and it sets in the west long before the constellation Leo begins to rise into the night sky.

One skywatcher, photographer Scott Tully in rural Connecticut, was delighted to snap a photo of a bright Leonid meteor as it streaked overhead just after 5 a.m. EST on Saturday. He summed the experience up in one word: "Amazing!"

Another observer, Mike Hankey of Freeland, Md., also snapped gorgeous photos of the Leonids before dawn Saturday morning.

While the first peak time to see the Leonids this year passed this morning, there's still a chance of catching a good show. These meteors are expected to offer a second peak of activity this coming Tuesday morning, Nov. 20.

PFT: Report: Retirement board paid disability for concussions

Broncos Chargers FootballAP

It?s late Friday afternoon and that can mean only one thing.

The weekly look at the injury reports submitted by all of the teams playing on Sunday. If I said it was something like waking up on Christmas morning to see what was under the tree, I?d be lying. It?s important business for this week?s games, though, and now you?ve got it all in one handy place for your perusal.

Just one more thing to say thanks for next Thursday when you aren?t shoveling stuffing in your mouth between plays.

Cardinals at Falcons

Defensive end Calais Campbell?s a 50/50 shot for the Cardinals, who are making non-injury related changes to the lineup as well. Cornerbacks Jamell Fleming and Greg Toler are also questionable. The Falcons won?t know until Sunday whether they?ll have wide receiver Julio Jones or linebacker Sean Weatherspoon in the lineup. Both are questionable, as are running back Michael Turner and defensive end John Abraham.

Buccaneers at Panthers

The Bucs have a slim injury report with guard Jamon Meredith as the only player listed as anything more than probable. He?s questionable for the NFC South tilt. Defensive end Antwan Applewhite is out for the Panthers, who also have eight players listed as probable. Wide receiver Steve Smith and left tackle Jordan Gross are both on that list.

Browns at Cowboys

Browns cornerback Joe Haden will be a game-time decision after injuring his oblique muscle in practice on Wednesday. Defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin, who has missed three of the last four games, is also questionable. If both are out, it won?t look good for the Browns defense. Running back DeMarco Murray is doubtful, so the Cowboys will likely be without him again this week. Defensive end Sean Lissemore, safety Matt Johnson and center Phil Costa are all out and cornerback Mike Jenkins is doubtful.

Jets at Rams

Wide receiver Jeremy Kelley didn?t practice on Friday and is listed as questionable for the game in St. Louis. Running backs Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight, defensive tackle Sione Po?uha and linebacker Bart Scott are also questionable. Coach Rex Ryan said he expects all of them to play. The Rams are looking pretty healthy, with wide receiver Austin Pettis standing as the biggest name among four questionable players.

Eagles at Redskins

You?ve likely heard that quarterback Michael Vick is out for this one. Wide receiver Jason Avant has also been ruled out, which means the Eagles? emergency quarterback for Sunday is reportedly DeSean Jackson. Wide receiver Pierre Gar?on and safety Brandon Meriweather are both likely to play for the otherwise healthy Redskins.

Packers at Lions

The Packers have known for some time that they are going to be without linebacker Clay Matthews, cornerback Charles Woodson and wide receiver Greg Jennings. Cornerback Sam Shields and linebacker Terrell Manning are both questionable for Green Bay. The Lions have ruled out defensive tackle Corey Williams and safety Amari Spievey. Louis Delmas is also doubtful, which would leave the Lions short in the secondary against a team that you?d rather not face when you?re short in the secondary. Cornerback Chris Houston and wide receiver Calvin Johnson are both questionable after practicing on Thursday and Friday.

Jaguars at Texans

The Jaguars started off the week by ruling out running back Maurice Jones-Drew and ended it by doing the same with cornerback Rashean Mathis, defensive back Dwight Lowery and linebacker Greg Jones. Tight end Owen Daniels will be a game-time decision again this week after not being able to play in the win over the Bears. Running back Ben Tate?s been ruled out, while linebacker Tim Dobbins and defensive tackle Shaun Cody are both questionable.

Bengals at Chiefs

It doesn?t look like Bengals will have wide receiver Marvin Jones or safety Reggie Nelson as both are doubtful, but there?s still a chance for center Jeff Faine and wide receiver Andrew Hawkins. Guard Jon Asamoah and wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin are both out for this week?s game. Center Ryan Lilja and quarterback Brady Quinn are both questionable, although it looks like Matt Cassel will start again this week.

Saints at Raiders

The Saints have a chance at getting running back Darren Sproles back in the lineup, but they won?t have tackle Zach Strief again this week. The Raiders will be without defensive tackle Richard Seymour and running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson again this week. They?ll make a determination about safety Tyvon Branch and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey before the start of the game.

Chargers at Broncos

Chargers tackle Jared Gaither hasn?t been ruled out, he?s doubtful to play, but defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin won?t play. Running back Ryan Mathews returned to practice Friday after missing two days with a neck injury and is listed as questionable. Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil is also questionable while cornerback Tracy Porter is out and guard Chris Kuper probably will be.

Colts at Patriots

The Colts ruled out cornerback Vontae Davis and tight end Coby Fleener were ruled out earlier in the week and the rest of the players on their injury report are probable. The Patriots? injury report is, as always, filled with questionable players everywhere you look. Tight end Aaron Hernandez is one of them, although reports are that he will not play, and guard Logan Mankins breaks the mold by earning a doubtful designation.

Ravens at Steelers

Cornerback Jimmy Smith?s been knocked out by sports hernia surgery and the Ravens could also be without a pair of defensive linemen. Defensive end Pernell McPhee is doubtful and defensive tackle Terrance Cody is questionable. The Steelers will be without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receiver Antonio Brown, tackle Marcus Gilbert and safety Troy Polamalu. Safety Ryan Clark is probable after suffering a concussion on Monday night, as is running back Rashard Mendenhall.

Three Del Mar sisters reaching out after winning battles with breast ...

By Claire Harlin

When local resident Angel O?Brien got word two years ago that her sister, Brenda, was diagnosed with cancer, it brought back a lifetime of memories, she said ? from as far back as 5 years old, when her mother was battling breast cancer at age 38. Every morning at breakfast, O?Brien recalled, her mom would sit at the table in a pink robe and walk her fingers up the wall, lifting her arm as high as she could and marking a notch on the wall. The notches stayed on the wall, a record of her gradual progress recovering from her mastectomy.

?That was a really hard time,? said O?Brien, 46, who has worked as a professional singer since age 15 when she joined the well known local band The Mar Dels. ?When I have memories of my mom I think, ?What a strong woman.??

O?Brien has always believed her mother to be a strong woman, but as of a little more than a year ago, she can truly relate. Only six months after her sister Brenda, 48, was diagnosed, a trip to the endocrinologist for O?Brien turned into her own breast cancer diagnosis.

?I wasn?t feeling well and knew I had a lump but thought it was nothing,? she said. ?They sent me immediately downstairs for a mammogram, and I was alone in a dark room when they told me. I think I said five times, ?Are you telling me I have breast cancer???

O?Brien stayed with her oldest sister, Kathleen, in Palm Springs during her treatment, and that four-month period of time was tough. Not only was it 114 degrees in Palm Springs during her chemotherapy, but O?Brien was unable to continue singing during that time and also her dog passed away. After her treatment, O?Brien urged her sister Kathleen, 52, to get a check-up ? and along came yet another unfortunate diagnosis.

?She went to the doctor and they told her she had stage three breast cancer,? said O?Brien. ?But it was hard to spot because it was a different kind. She didn?t have a lump or anything; She had calcifications. She had been tired a lot, but the symptoms don?t always indicate cancer.?

Kathleen, Angel and Brenda O?Brien.

O?Brien and her sisters have the BRCA2 gene, which makes women more susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer by genetic inheritance. The ladies have been reaching out to women through their website, ThreeSistersSurvival.com, to tell their story and encourage women to get tested for the BRCA2 gene and get a preventative mastectomy if they have it. They were even invited to appear on the daytime TV show ?The View? to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness month in October and tell their story. Although the sisters are all survivors who are powering through the recovery and reconstruction stages of their battles, their accounts left the audience moved and hosts Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck streaming with tears.

?It was so amazing getting interview by them on the couch, and at one point Kathleen pulled her wig off and she got a standing ovation from the audience, all wearing pink shirts,? she said, adding that she got to hang out with Whoopi Goldberg after the show in her dressing room and the actress gave each sister a pair of shoes from her extensive collection.

?She had so many different kinds of Converse and shoes that companies just send her,? said O?Brien. ?She told us to pick any pair we wanted, and we all happened to wear the same size as Whoopi, a size 10.?

Kathleen works as a real estate agent in Palm Springs, and Brenda is a make-up artist for the Lion King Broadway show in New York. With the exception of working as a recording artist in Japan for about six years in the 1990s, O?Brien has stuck to her local roots, living in Del Mar and singing professionally around San Diego.

More recently, though, she?s shifted her efforts to local outreach to help others who have or are going through breast cancer treatment. She made breast cancer awareness shirts that she sells in Place 360 and Julie?s Beachwear in Del Mar, and she also makes embellished headscarves that she sells, or she donates them to women who face losing their hair due to treatment. She uses all proceeds to help patients, and she?s in the process of setting up a foundation called Pink Angel. She?s also helping the owner of Julie?s Beachwear to decorate a store window with uplifting messages and pink gear for the thousands who will pass through Del Mar on Nov. 16 for the Susan G. Komen three-day walk.

O?Brien said she has received a particularly positive response about the headscarves she has been making. She used to make them for herself when she lost her hair and she was inspired to keep making them after receiving loads of compliments when she wore them.

?When you lose your hair, that?s the single weirdest day,? she said. ?It starts coming off in clumps but there?s usually one day when you make the decision to either keep it or shave it off, and it doesn?t feel so great.?

Having experienced every aspect of having cancer, O?Brien said she knows about the little things that can make people feel better, and helping one?s self image during hair loss is one of those things.

O?Brien said after her mom, who ran the public relations firm O?Brien Communications in downtown Del Mar for more than a decade, passed away from appendix cancer at age 65, she never saw herself becoming the soldier she considered her mom to be.

?I remember once having a conversation with a friend and saying, ?I don?t know what I would do if it ever happened to me.? I said I didn?t think I?d be strong enough,? she said. ?But then, boom, it happens and you are strong enough. You become your own soldier in your own army and you are responsible for pulling it together and taking each day as it comes.?

For more information on the O?Brien sisters, to make a donation or to buy a shirt or headscarf, visit ThreeSistersSurvival.com. O?Brien can also be reached at (760) 423-9652 or by emailing threesisterssurvival@yahoo.com.

Andrew Kohut: The GOP Might Be Out Of Step With Some Voters, But Mitt Romney Was An Unusually Unpopular Party Standard-Bearer.

Misreading Election 2012
The GOP might be out of step with some voters, but Mitt Romney was an unusually unpopular party standard-bearer.
By ANDREW KOHUT

Postelection talk of "lessons learned" is often exaggerated and misleading, and so it is in 2012.

A week after President Obama won re-election, two themes are dominant. First, that Mr. Obama kept his job because key elements of his base?notably young people, African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans?turned out for him. Second, that the growing size of these voting blocs represents a decisive challenge for the Republican Party.

Both points are true, but most observers are overstating the gravity of the GOP's problem. In particular, they are paying too little attention to how weak a candidate Mitt Romney was, and how much that hurt Republican prospects.

Here is what the exit poll found. Mr. Romney's personal image took a hard hit during the primary campaign and remained weak on election day. Just 47% of exit-poll respondents viewed him favorably, compared with 53% for Mr. Obama. Throughout the campaign, Mr. Romney's favorable ratings were among the lowest recorded for a presidential candidate in the modern era. A persistent problem was doubt about his empathy with the average voter. By 53% to 43%, exit-poll respondents said that Mr. Obama was more in touch than Mr. Romney with people like themselves.

Mr. Romney was never fully embraced by Republicans themselves, which may have inhibited the expected strong Republican turnout. Pew's election-weekend survey found Mr. Romney with fewer strong supporters (33%) than Mr. Obama (39%). Similarly, a much greater percentage of Obama supporters (80%) than Romney supporters (60%) told Pew that they were voting for their candidate rather than against his opponent.

Surprisingly, Mr. Romney proved unable to exploit Mr. Obama's biggest weakness: the economy. Seventy-six percent of exit-poll respondents rated the national economy "poor" or only "fair," and just 25% said their finances were better off than they were four years ago. Yet voters expressed roughly equal confidence in Mr. Obama's ability to handle the economy (48%) as in Mr. Romney's (49%).

Mr. Romney was hurt by the perception?reinforced by Democratic attack ads and his secretly recorded comments about the "47%"?that he wasn't for the average voter. With 55% of voters in the exit poll saying they think the U.S. economic system favors the wealthy, a large majority believed that Mr. Obama's policies favor the middle class (44%) or the poor (31%). By contrast, 53% thought Mr. Romney's policies would favor the rich.

Despite their weak candidate, Republicans increased their share of the presidential vote among many major demographic groups. Compared with 2008, they made significant gains among men (four percentage points), whites (four points), younger voters (six points), white Catholics (seven points) and Jews (nine points). Mr. Romney also carried the independent vote 50% to 45%. Four years ago, independents voted for Mr. Obama 52% to 44%.

Republicans can take some solace from these gains. In addition, only 43% of voters this year said they wanted an activist government (compared with 52% in 2008), and 49% continued to disapprove of Mr. Obama's health-care law (compared with 44% approving).

In short, the current American electorate is hardly stacked against the Republican Party. But Republicans should recognize that, on balance, Americans remain moderate?holding a mix of liberal and conservative views. They generally believe that small government is better and that ObamaCare is bad. But the exit poll shows that 59% believe abortion should be legal, 65% support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and a surprising plurality support legalizing same-sex marriage in their states.

Threading the ideological needle with this electorate is vital for the Republicans in the future?and for the Democrats, too.

Company: Moody?s Investor Service

Position: Associate Analyst ? Public Finance Group, California Team

College/University you attended: MPA Wagner/NYU, BA SFSU

Major: Masters of Public Administration, BA of Geography

How did you find your job? Networking with alumni from Wagner. I identified a group of alumni working in the areas that interested me most. I asked them for informational interviews. During the calls I learned everything I could about their roles, their organizations and the challenges they face. One alumnus turned out to be the managing director of public finance at Moody?s. Her work seemed intellectually stimulating and very challenging. Working in public finances as an analyst seemed like a rare opportunity to learn about hundreds of government organizations and immerse myself in regional economics. After our phone call I did even more research, and followed up with thank you email and expressed my interest in working for Moody?s if an opening arose. I found even more alumni who worked at Moody?s at continued the routine of asking for informational interviews. Within weeks I had spoken with several people across the organization. Eventually it paid off, and two months later I was driving across the country to start at an opening in the San Francisco office.

What?s the weirdest job you ever had? Starting a business at age 17.

What?s the best career advice you ever received? Remain open to new challenges and opportunities without losing sight of your big picture goals. It?s easier said than done, but both flexibility and commitment are critical for advancement and fulfillment.

What is the hardest interview question you?ve ever been asked? How did you answer
it? ?Are you willing to do X.? The ?X? being some unexpected and in my opinion negative component of the job. The problem was that besides this new twist I really wanted the job and in the middle of an interview when you?ve been unemployed for months it is easy to be very agreeable. However, I consider a job interview a two-way interview, where I am interviewing them as much as being interviewed. After a moment of honest reflection I said ?no.? It was
difficult to essentially nullify my chances of the job mid-interview, but it was important for me to set limits for myself and communicate them. I wouldn?t recommend everyone react the same way, it is very situational. In many circumstances it is best to provide an affirmative answer, and spend time after the interview reflecting on your response.

What part of your college experience prepared you most for the real world? Writing essays and presenting in class. In every job I?ve ever had communication has been critical in some. Even in the most technical roles it is critical to convey abstract ideas through writing or presenting to your manager or groups. All of the essays and class presentation on even the most
random topics prepared me to better articulate my ideas and get my point across.

If you could tell your college self one thing, what would it be? Relax, stop worrying about what you?ll be when you grow up because there are plenty of jobs in the world and it just takes time to find them.

Company: Johnson & Johnson

Position: IT Analyst

College/University you attended: Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development

Major: Media, Culture, and Communication

How did you find your job? I completed a 6-month internship with J&J before my senior year and heard about the rotational IT Leadership Development Program which I am currently in the process of completing. The support of my manager and the network I had built within J&J definitely didn?t hurt!

What?s the weirdest job you ever had? Selling Cutco knives. I?d say it?s pretty weird when someone asks you what your job is and you respond with ?I sell knives??

What?s the best career advice you ever received? These words from Denice Torres (President of McNeil Consumer Healthcare) really resonate with me: ?With your career, you have to say what you want ? but make sure you want what you?re saying.?

What is the hardest interview question you?ve ever been asked? How did you answer it? ?Tell me a time you made a mistake or came across a big challenge ? and what you did to overcome it; how did you remediate the situation?? I think this is one of the hardest questions to answer because as human beings we just don?t like admitting when we?re wrong, and telling others about our mistakes is not an easy thing to do either! I addressed this question by
discussing the importance of humility and transparency in both professional and personal life, along with the consequence of owning the decisions I made and learning from them. I used my J&J internship and experience as President of an on-campus club as illustrative examples.

What part of your college experience prepared you most for the real world? Each and every one of my (8!) internships prepared me in different ways. Fundamentally, 3 things:

1. I got to experience ?office life? in a variety of environments ? large corporations vs. boutique firms, managing my career development completely on my own vs. being a part of a formal
internship program, etc.

2. I?m thankful that I was never in a position where expectations were for me to simply get coffee, answer phones, and make photocopies. Instead, I was given the opportunity to learn by being hands-on: creating press materials and writing releases, interacting with editors and bloggers, and more ? tasks that my managers themselves were doing. I was lucky throughout the various internships that my managers weren?t micro-managers; they gave me the space to discover what parts of the business I liked (or not) and gave me the room to come up with solutions on my own when possible.

3. I learned early on how to navigate the office through building relationships, networking effectively, and communicating clearly to a diverse group of professionals from various functions and industries.

If you could tell your college self one thing, what would it be? I would quote Oprah Winfrey? ?You can have it all. Just not all at once.?
