Gearing up for the Canadian Responsible Investment Conference ...

Striking the right balance between content for industry newcomers and experienced practitioners is often a challenge for conference organizers. The Social Investment Organization has done a remarkable job overcoming this challenge by offering a strong line up of speakers, panels and workshops for the Canadian Responsible Investment Conference 2013.

The Canadian Responsible Investment Conference 2013 will take place from June 17 to 19 at the Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel.?

This year?s theme, ?Engaging for Change,? revolves around the role of SRI in local and global contexts, and across a spectrum of industries and sectors with the goal of supporting the development of sustainable and prosperous financial markets.

A range of stakeholder perspectives?

Uncovering the trends, challenges, and opportunities for SRI, conference participants will hear from leaders in the financial sector including John Montalbano, Chief Executive Officer of RBC Global Asset Management and Gary Hawton, President, OceanRock Investments.?

Personally, I'm looking forward to hearing the business perspective on leading social change from Launi Skinner, former President of Starbucks, in her keynote address ?Starting something new?.?Given her lived experience as a corporate executive overcoming organizational resistance, it will be interesting to hear her insights on how to make transformative social and business change mainstream. As is increasingly demonstrated across sectors, intrapreneurship (using entrepreneurial skills while working within a large corporation) is on the rise across the globe. I believe that this keynote address will further inspire the intrapreneur in all of us.

Consumer and community value sets are shaping corporate engagement and corporate responsibility and a?company?s market value is just one piece of its story.?Mike Rowlands, Prinicipal at Junxion Strategy, will highlight what consumer values mean to corporate value. He will discusss the ways that social, environmental, and governance values are changing the corporate story and setting the foundation for the 21st century enterprise.?

Whether you?re new to SRI or an experienced practitioner, there is much to be learned from the perspectives of key stakeholders in the space. Seeing through the lens of financial leaders, corporations and consumers can help investors and investment professionals identify their role in SRI and locate the opportunities to create new value for themselves, their clients, and their organizations.

ESG across industries?

In practice, SRI can have different implications for different industries. As investors increasingly place their money in industries in which they are most passionate, SRI value frameworks continue to emerge where ESG gaps had previously existed.?This year?s breakout sessions include both snapshot and critical in-depth discussions on the emergence and role of SRI in a range of sectors, discussing issues that are regularly on the minds of investors and consumers.?

Sessions such as, ?Aboriginal Communities and Extractives Industry: Is Conflict Inevitable?? and, ?Environment: Food Sustainability,? will shed light on the unique issues and social and environmental considerations in each sector. Hearing directly from Suncor and Goldcorp as they share their experiences from the forefront of the mining, oil, and gas industries will provide the context for a deep discussion on how corporations are fostering best practices in collaboration and cooperation with Aboriginal communities.?

As access to affordable and sustainable food remains a critical issue for consumers and investors alike, it will also be very interesting to hear from Donovan Woollard of Alterrus in the session, ?Environment: Food Sustainability?. Alterrus is a world leader in vertical farming technologies and is transforming the way cities access food.?The roles of local and corporate leadership are converging within the entire food system. This cooperation is bringing about change that can increase the quality of life in our local and global communities, while sustaining our environment.
